Time to bid Adieu

It sure feels like a lifetime since I first discovered the world of blogs and then embarked on having my own blog! It was the rage then to have a blog, and it felt cool to have your own domain name too. Soc-med wasn't as advance as now and blogging seemed to be the right avenue to let out our rage and thoughts then.

However, as the digital world slowly evolved, the blogging desire tapered down especially when soc-med took the world by storm! With soc-med, it is so easy to upload and post something. So easy that I prefer to post via Instagram as opposed to blogging! Hence, this has triggered a lot of conflicting thoughts if I should continue with my blog.

It has been a good 16 years since I have started blogging on March 12, 2009!!! It has slowly come to my attention that writing a blog is not my preferred avenue now. As such, I have decided to stop blogging indefinitely. If you are interested to follow my journey beyond this blog, you can find me at:

[MPOV] When Witches Can't Cast

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.36/5
Published: April 9, 2025
Author: Matilda Lockwood
Genre: Historical romance
Dedham Vale, England, 1758

Drowned if she is, damned if she isn’t—Gatty Carter can’t escape the curse of being called a witch.

Marked by suspicion and chased by fear, Gatty’s life shatters after a cruel prank nearly ends it. Desperate for safety, she flees the only home she’s ever known.

But escape offers no sanctuary. Arrested for vagrancy in a strange town, Gatty soon finds herself at the mercy of a mysterious family with dark secrets of their own. They claim to run a home for wayward women, but in reality, they seek out survivors of witchcraft accusations, hoping to unlock powers none of the women possess.

Among this unlikely coven, led by an overimaginative matriarch, Gatty discovers a bond she never expected. But as she grows close to these women, and even closer to a handsome librarian—her deception becomes harder to keep. Now, she must embrace the very role she’s always feared—or risk losing the only family she’s ever known.

For readers who believe the real magic is women who refuse to be silenced.
I have read the author's previous novels and, surprise, surprise, I actually like this best! When Witches can't Cast is about Gatty, who was condemned as a witch and sentenced to death by the villagers. She managed to escape and survived the ordeal, running to other villages to hide. Discovered by Lydia, she was brought to a home for women like her predicament. Slowly and surely, she has blossomed into a leader, a healer and finding true love amidst it all.

It was an engaging read with many trials and turbulence thrown in Gatty's way. I liked how she survived each of it and grown stronger. The teamwork and friendships shared with the other women in the house were truly inspiring.

Overall, it is a 4/5 read for me. Nicely plotted with slow, blossoming romance, though I did wish it to be faster at times LOL! Thanks to LibraryThings and the author for this copy in return for my honest review!

[MPOV] Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 4.13/5
Published: July 5, 2022
Author: Gabrielle Zevin
Genre: Contemporary romance
In this exhilarating novel, two friends—often in love, but never lovers—come together as creative partners in the world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality.

On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won't protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts.

Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Yes, it is a love story, but it is not one you have read before.
This book somehow reminds me of the movie, Ready Player One, based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline. I have not read that book, but I've enjoyed the movie very much. I could easily imagine the characters in this book whilst reading with actors from Ready Player One, LOL! I know some were Asian, but it's ok for me that they looked Caucasian.

I do find that I get lost and flipped through it whenever there are jargons of techs and video games in it. I know that's the gist of the story but it's just me not able to grasp it. Also, the story does go back and forth so I had to reread to realize it's a throwback at times. The only gripe I didn't like was the touch of politics and world issues which were added nonchalantly in the games. Other than that, it truly was a nicely written story about 2 best friends from young to eternity, living through their imperfect lives trying to support each other whilst loving them silently. I get that it's totally relatable and something that most of us would treasure especially solid friendship in a chaotic world we are living in right now. I did anticipate it would somehow end as such though I was hoping for a better one LOL! Overall, it was an enjoyable read amidst the video games blitz.

Thanks to Revitalize Books for lending me this copy in return for my honest review.

[MPOV] The Beasts Beneath the Winds

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.43/5
Publish: October 21, 2025
Editor: Hanna Alkaf
Genre: Asian folklore, mythology, anthology, short stories, young adult
A sweeping and magical story collection showcasing the mythical creatures of Southeast Asia, including work by two-time Newbery medalist Erin Entrada Kelly and National Book Award finalist Shing Yin Khor

A turtle the size of an island. A cricket that can possess you if swallowed. A giant who turns enemies to stone. The legends of Southeast Asia—or “the lands below the winds,” as explorers used to call it—are populated with a whole menagerie of colorful beasts that inspire awe and fear in equal measure. Yet, passed on as they are through story and song, so many of these stories remain rooted in some long-forgotten past and bound by the borders of the region, creatures of myth and memory and nothing more. Until now.

Welcome to The Beasts Beneath the Winds, a collection of Southeast Asia’s most elusive cryptids by a team of bestselling and award-winning authors. Within these gorgeously illustrated pages, readers will find the stories of seventeen regular kids who encounter these mythical creatures in the here and now, and—fortunately or unfortunately—live to tell the tale
There are a total of 17 short stories in this anthology. It is quite interesting with the many different cultures and believes captured in one book. I am so amazed by it all!
  1. American Cousin by Erin Entrada Kelly
  2. The Mystery of the Meowing Makcik by Nadia Mikail
  3. The Girl in the Graveyard by Brandon Hoang
  4. The Egg by Mandy Moe Pwint Tu
  5. Fish out of Water by Moniza Hossain
  6. Forest Keeper by V.T. Bidania
  7. Oliver Santos and the Best Birthday Yet by Mae Respicio
  8. The Curse of Sang Kelembai by Hanna Alkaf
  9. Dance of the Unicorns by Van Hoang
  10. Rich and Strange by Greg van Eekhout
  11. Kusu Island by June CL Tan
  12. The Mawas in the Airport by Shing Yin Khor
  13. Melati and the Eternal Battle by Jesse Q. Sutanto
  14. Naga Fireballs by Veeda Bybee
  15. Ellie Takes Flight by Emma Goddard
  16. Dara, Danny, and the Thai Giants by Dow Phumiruk
  17. Lexie Libot Gets Lost in a Wedding by Gail D. Villanueva
I was mesmerized... entranced by the many magical creatures spotlighted in this anthology. TBH, I was today years old when I learnt of so many folklores, definitely an eye-opening read and kept me going. As it's all short stories, it was an easy read to finish.

I do not have any particular favourites as each story has its own flair and carry its own tale. Most of the authors are unknown to me. I do find some of the writings and plots were not as polished. Since it is short, it was bearable and easy to finish reading it. Offhand, I would say Kusu Island, The Egg and Oliver Santos and the Best Birthday Yet were memorable to me.

Overall, if you are looking for some easy read with mythical elements, please give this book a try. I am glad to be given the chance to read and review this e-ARC, all thanks to the author and editor, Hanna Alkaf.

[MPOV] Treasures of Castle Rowley: A Rowley Family Romance Novel

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.2/5
Published: October 31, 2024
Author: Matilda Lockwood
Genre: Historical romance, Adventure
Bound by duty, yet drawn by desire—will Cecelia follow her family to a new world or forge her own path with a daring artist?

In the shadowed halls of Castle Rowley, maid and expectant mother Cecelia faces a future she never asked to cross the Atlantic with her family for a new beginning in America, far from their troubled past at the castle. But her encounter with Kunal, a passionate woodcarver from the East India Company, ignites a different fire within her. He sees her—truly sees her—and inspires her to pursue her hidden talent for drawing.

As their secret romance blooms, Cecelia is caught in a tumult of heart and duty. With her departure looming, she must embrace the safety of the path laid out for her, or risk everything for the life and love she dreams of?

Treasures of Castle Rowley is a tale of love’s power to defy expectations and the bravery required to follow one’s heart.
Treasures of Castle Rowley is a continuation from the first book, Secrets of Castle Rowley which featured Annabel. Treasures, however, is about Cecelia who is a pregnant scullery maid with a keen eye for artistic endeavors. She's very talented in arts but could not venture much into it due to her condition and also her family's circumstances. One day, a chanced encounter with Kunal, a talented woodcarver, in the market changed her life forever.

Here is my take on the first book:
"Every journey shapes us, even the most difficult ones," she said gently. ''What matters is how we carry it forward.''
The storyline may lean towards the norm, since such pregnancy would have been frown upon during those times, but it is common in the current world hence it is easier to relate to. I could imagine while reading it, as though I'm watching a Diva channel type of movie! The writing is fluid, and the pace is definitely better than the first with more adventurous plots. I have enjoyed the book from the start until when it reaches towards the end. I find the ending a little comedic, a little rush. I guess I would have preferred a little slow burn or a little dramatic LOL! With that said, I do enjoy this more than book 1 :-)
''Reading should bring joy, not frustration. If it doesn't, then it's simply the wrong book.''
In summary, even though the story started on the 'wrong footing', it has a 'happy ever after' ending after a tumultuous adventure! All's well that ends well! My heartfelt gratitude to the author for taking the trouble to post this book to me. She has even included many gifts that I will definitely treasure, especially these lovely bookmarks that she has handmade them herself!

[MPOV] The Bluestockings

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.71/5
Published: January 21, 2025 by The Nook Press
Author: Wendi Nunnery
Genre: Young Adult, Mystery Fiction

A magical bookshop, a long-lost novel, and two daughters searching for the truth...

Everyone in Hawthorn, Georgia believes Vera Black is dead. Everyone, that is, except her twelve-year-old daughter, Eleanor.

Six years have passed since Vera vanished after work one day, and Eleanor, who helps her father run the family bookshop, secretly believes that Vera abandoned them. When she discovers a draft of an old novel hidden in a secret desk compartment, a story tied to the strange death of another Hawthorn woman, Eleanor finds herself caught up in a mystery that causes her to rethink everything she believes about her mother.

At eighty years old, Ruby Hurst has lived under the shadow of her mother Alice's mysterious death since she was a child. What she witnessed on the day Alice drowned has cast a shadow over everything Ruby loves, and she looks forward to the day when she will leave Hawthorn, and everyone in it, behind. Until one day, when Eleanor Black shows up with a long-lost novel and breaks apart the carefully constructed world Ruby has hidden within for decades.

A warm, tender novel exploring the bounds of family, community, and love in unexpected places, The Bluestockings is a story for everyone who has ever hoped, even when all hope seemed lost.

I’ve enjoyed this captivating novel which triggered many nostalgic moments. It sure felt like I’m reading a story out of a Diva channel, which is suitable for young readers too.

It is so relatable, so on point especially when Ruby visited the beach, where she lost her mother, again. From that moment on, with Ruby sort of come to her senses, I find the story became more well-rounded. It was more engaging then and, though it was kinda predictable, I was reading as fast just to know how it ends.

It is a heartwarming story that was a breeze to read with magical elements that I love, so easy to digest and a fun read indeed.

[MPOV] Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.57/5
Published: October 14, 2021
Author: isthisselfcare (Brigitte Knightley)
Genre: Fanfiction, romance

Hermione straddles the magical and non-magical worlds as a medical researcher and Healer about to make a Big Discovery. Draco is an Auror assigned to protect her from forces unknown -- to both of their displeasure.

Features hypercompetent, fiery Hermione and lazy, yet dangerous, Draco. Slow burn.

Rating: Explicit
Fandom: Harry Potter
Relationship: Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy

Tags: Healer Hermione Granger, Researcher Hermione Granger, Auror Draco Malfoy, Slow burn, unresolved sexual tension, eventual smut, POV Draco Malfoy, Forced Collaboration, Romance, romcom, Action/Adventure, EWE, HEA, reckless overuse of author's favorite tropes, oblivious idiots, All aboard the SS Denial, late-stage pining, what is pining if not denial persevering, no first names we die like men, do not look too closely at the plot you will only hurt yourself, scandalous ankle touching, misuse of whirlpool baths, graphic depictions of competent women, eroticized arithmancy, Crookshanks will fight god or become him, human on mushroom violence, Schrodinger's ethics, nuns
A fan fiction which gave me an ending worthy than the original coupling! I have always wondered why Hermione was with Ron when I find her better off with Harry. This fanfic gave me a different perspective though and Dramione it is!!!

I've totally enjoyed the plot filled with many ups and downs, so entertaining especially when they were in Malfoy Manor! The slow pace made me so anxious, with Draco being so dense that I feel like giving him a push! I loved the ending, predictable yet so lovingly satisfying!

This fanfic totally reminds me of when I was reading Fifty Shades of Grey. Of course, that was poorly written but the gist of it, the feels whilst reading it was the same! Only difference is this Draco fanfic was well written and well explored, making it a breeze to read through even though it was a thick tome! I heard the author has been scouted to publish this book soon, with a change of names, etc. I do hope it is as good, if not better than this one :-)

Thanks to 2 Dramione fans who made sure I read this! I'm sooo sold!

[MPOV] The Housemaid, #1

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.31/5
Published: April 26, 2022
Author: Freida McFadden
Genre: thriller, mystery, suspense
“Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…

Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

They don’t know what I’m capable of…

An unbelievably twisty read that will have you glued to the pages late into the night. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train won’t be able to put this down!
Finally, I have boarded The Housemaid train and there is no turning back! It was engaging with all the plot twists, but I did find it to be predictable and it does remind me of other similar books I have read. If you like Gillian Flynn and Sandra Brown, you should pick this up before it hits the cinema. Yeah, it has been adapted into the big screen!

I did enjoy the journey painted and how it has ended so I am rating it 4/5 from the entertainment point of view. Also, I was hooked from the start to the last page, with the way it was written and how the story moved on. It did pop up some questions in my head with some parts lackadaisical, though not as significant, like when she finally hooked up with Andrew or when it was revealed what she was capable of. Sort of missed out some polishing to the set-up IMO.

Overall, an entertaining read and I do hope that book 2, The Housemaid's Secret, would be better!

[MPOV] Love, Lies, Lunar New Year

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.83/5
Published: December 11, 2024
Author: Grace Tang
Genre: Asian romcom
Lily Wong is an animal activist whose main goal in life is to save reptiles from being turned into purses. Scarred by a broken engagement, she is resolutely single at thirty-five, which doesn’t sit well with her overbearing Chinese parents. The pressure to find a partner intensifies after her brother brings home a new girlfriend just before the Lunar New Year. So when Charles Chen–dashing heir to a multi-million dollar shark fin empire–asks to fake-date her while she’s protesting at the mall, she agrees on the condition that he fake-date her in return, to get her parents off her back for the holiday.

Charles is faking a relationship with Lily to solve his own his parents can’t stand his spoiled, social media-famous girlfriend, Margaux. After a bad fight with Margaux leaves him alone for the Lunar New Year, Charles convinces Lily to pose as his girlfriend. Charles hopes that by bringing the obstinately plain, shark fin-hating Lily home as a contrast, his parents will appreciate Margaux and accept her, helping him win Margaux back.

Charles’s plan backfires when his parents unexpectedly take a liking to Lily. The more they try to remedy the situation, the deeper their lie gets–and the more their real feelings for each other grow. As their families threaten to unravel their increasingly-less-fake relationship, Lily has to confront her fear of getting hurt again, and Charles has to decide between his family and his feelings. When Margaux reappears to reclaim her wealthy boyfriend, Lily and Charles are forced to make a decision between going back to the lives they knew before, or following their hearts into the new and unknown.
Truth be told, I totally enjoyed this novel. IMO, it is a mix of Kevin Kwan and Sophie Kinsella, so Asian romantic comedy... somewhat akin to Bridget Jones, LOL! I liked how the story flourished from when Lily met Charles to fake-dating to slowly falling for each other. It was like a Diva movie vibe that I couldn't wait for the Happy Ever After!

Love, Lies, Lunar New Year was an easy read, a breeze to finish it though it took me awhile due to the Chinese New Year break :-) Yeah, I chose to read this during the Lunar New Year LOL! I also find that it is a great effort from the author since it is her debut novel! Not forgetting, a cool storyline to boot!

Anyway, thanks to LibraryThing and the author, Grace Tang, for this e-book. If you are looking for something light and fun to read, why not give this novel a try.

[MPOV] The Accidental Malay

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.52/5
Published: January 1, 2022
Author: Karina Robles Bahrin
Genre: Asian lit, romance, fiction
Jasmine Leong wants to be the next CEO of Phoenix, her family's billion-ringgit company known especially for its bak kwa. But when Jasmine discovers she is actually a Malay Muslim, her newfound identity threatens to upend her life and ambitions. Set in Kuala Lumpur and other areas of Malaysia, The Accidental Malay examines the human cost of a country's racial policies, and paints a portrait of a woman unwilling to accept the fate history has designated for her.
Initially, I was kinda uninterested to read this novel even though the title has caught my attention. It's influenced by the fact that the author has won an award for it. Ya, I'm a little doubtful with award winning titles as I usually find it overrated. I was gifted this by chance, so I took the plunge and read it.
"You can never do enough. You will always need to do better. Nothing is ever promised to girls."
Lo and behold, I found it to be funny, predictable yet entertaining, similarly to Kevin Kwan's Lies and Weddings. It was a well written novel, but I was taken aback with its overly mentioned religious coup and the stereotype upbringing. That aside, it is an easy read with an engaging prose that definitely had me wanting to finish it. It took me a while to finish it as I stopped during the festive period and then picking it up where I left off was a breeze!
"You're only in love with the idea of us," she says, gathering herself and sitting up. She turns to him, holding his wan face in her hand. "We should have ended a long time ago. Neither of us can save the other."
I do understand why it is a controversial book especially since it is related to religion. As I have mentioned, it was insinuated a little too often. Luckily, the overall premise of the story is entertaining for me and though it may or may not be a truthful depiction, this is a work of fiction. I'm more to the romance aspect of this novel which I find a little weird. Why weird? Well, the way how Jasmine fell out of Iskandar (who has been stringing her along) and fell in love with Kuan Yew (the swoon worthy one). I guess I would have wanted more flourish LOL! I know, too much Harlequins, LOL!!!

Oh well, I've enjoyed it and now moving on to my next read!

[MPOV] Once Upon A Kamcheng

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.25/5
Published: January 1, 2020
Author: Lillian Tong
Genre: Asian Lit, Cultural
The Straits Chinese Babas and Nyonyas are ordinary people in extraordinary times. Their courage, sense of adventure, innate resilience and resourcefulness stood them in good stead through displacement and diaspora as they are buoyed along through centuries of dynamic and transitory history of the world.

The significance of persons and families as agents of history in affecting and causing the development of alternative history makes up the kaleidoscope of the memoirs and stories of Baba Nyonya life and experiences in this book.

We invite and welcome you to delve beyond gilded lattice screens, behind embroidered silk curtains, and immerse yourself in their eccentric and extravagant, if curious, strange, and wonderful world!
This is a compilation of true short stories pertaining the Baba Nyonya and Peranakan culture from way back then. It has been retold from the view of their children and grandchildren, reliving the glory days. It was an interesting reading though it wasn't as engaging since it's more of a retelling from their own experiences. It was also more of an enlightening read for me as I learn more of the culture, especially since my paternal grandma was a little bit Nyonya. If you are looking for an educational cultural read, then go ahead and pick this up.

Goodbye 2024! Hello 2025!

Finally, a chapter closes and another opens. I can't wait to leave 2024 behind and move forward to 2025. It truly was a challenging year filled with ups and downs... too many downs that it is hard to comprehend at times. How not to have mental breakdown, I wonder, but I just kept on moving as I didn't want to dwell on it too much or I would definitely have a meltdown. It is best to keep on moving forward and try to stay positively, for the sake of my family. I pray that 2025 will be a better year, more opportunities with more positive outcome. Let's usher in 2025 with a bang!

Author: Lee Su Kim
Genre: Short stories, Asian anthologies
Pure reading pleasure from start to finish … bitter-sweet, light and delicate as the kebaya, spiced with the tang of sambal belachan.

From the author of the award-winning bestseller Kebaya Tales comes yet another amazing collection featuring the colourful world of the babas and nyonyas. In Sarong Secrets, Su Kim tells more tales of passion and unfulfilled love, of innocence lost, greed and betrayal, of loneliness and the search for a sense of belonging – all of which harken to the unique Peranakan culture, a heritage teetering on the brink of extinction. Filled with humour, wit and vivid details, her compelling stories will delight and excite.

Interspersed amongst her stories are pictures of beautiful sarongs, accessories and artefacts from a unique community renowned for its love of colour and sumptuous material culture.
Finally, I have been contemplating on which books should I start from my TBR and I have decided to start with this, Sarong Secrets by Lee Su Kim.

There are 12 short stories which made it a breeze to finish reading it! It was unique, interesting and, most importantly, different as there were many photos of various sarongs and its history! It's well written, the stories infused with local beliefs and baba nyonya cultures which are refreshing yet relatable for me. I've definitely enjoyed it and feeling enriched with all the sarong history!

[MPOV] Lead Change Heart Way: A Regenerative Journey Travelling Inwards

My review: 5/5
Goodreads review: 5/5
Published: January 15, 2024
Author Koo Lily
Editor: Chuah Ai Jou
Genre: Non-fiction, self-help, motivational, inspirational, self-care

A very BIG thank you to the author and editor for the opportunity to read and explore this bright and colourful book!

I am glad to have taken on this book review as it is unlike any other self-help books. The concept is different, so different that had me enjoying it so much! It truly is a refreshing and delightful read, not at all boring especially with the many beautiful art projects and I could participate the many action items at my own pace :-)

The book is about the author's perspective during the Movement Control Order (MCO) here in Malaysia when Covid started to spread. As we were restricted from going far then, we have all the time in the world to do whatever we want at home.
"Koo Lily is the founder and principal consultant of  mq Training Coaching Consulting. She is an energetic, engaging, and passionate facilitator by profession."
Lily had time to indulge in her hobby and ponder on her life. The end result is this awesome book, Lead Change Heart Way: A Regenerative Journey Travelling Inwards, incorporating both her art and her written thoughts.

Whilst reading, I can also imagine her facilitating and coaching from the book! Though I have not met her, I can sort of hear Lily as though I am in a class albeit an invisible one LOL! I honestly liked the way it was delivered which I find interesting and inspiring with the little questions at the end of each chapter. It had me pondering on the said topic and I would look back after a while to answer it. I will not divulge too much so you will have to read it to know what I mean :-)
"Shift your mind to explore the qualities which inspire you, and not solely be driven by their successes."
I do believe this book came at the right time. With so much negativity from soc-meds and life, I was a little frustrated, a little let down with a negative mindset. I was also on a crossroad, pondering on my future with retirement looming ahead. Slowly but surely, I could sort out my chaotic mind and set my sight a little better positively. Questions like "Do you have any tips for staying present in the process of change?" and "What's your outlier story?" are great action items. I'm inspired by her 3 SEEDology mindsets, among others, which helped me think positively. "Who are you grateful for?" sets the ball rolling for me, my first action item!
"We do not live just to survive, but to be alive."
If you are interested to get the book, Lead Change Heart Way is on a discounted price from now until the end of November 2024! It is going for RM60 now!!! The normal selling price is RM75. You will also be doing a good deed as 50% of the proceeds will go to a breast cancer charity!

[MPOV] The Crooked Little Pieces: Volume 4

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.75/5
Published: September 2, 2024
Author: Sophia Lambton
Genre: Historical fiction, family drama
Curiosity can be a killer.

The clock begins to tick on Anneliese’s moral compass as the sleuth-psychiatrist delves deeper into London’s social dregs – encountering a playbook too subversive for her tastes. While Isabel belittles the idea of jealousy Charles Anthony views his obsession as a Jezebel. Susanna’s (other) indiscretions are hard-pressed to rest in peace as torments old and new distort her life. Headmaster Richard on the other hand sparks strife when he reviles his troublesome subordinate… again.

Repression treads with clumsy thumps on both the sisters’ souls in this suspicion-rousing feast of silent dreams: a gallery of scintillating scenes where passion and possessiveness still lurk beneath the surface.

Envy, pride, wrath and desire light a fire in The Crooked Little Pieces: Volume 4: the part inviting you to pick your poison.
Thanks to the author and publisher for this copy of The Crooked Little Pieces: Volume 4.

It picked up from where it has left off in volume 3, with both Anneliese and Isabel single again. The former so obsessed with her client, CA Remington and the latter looking for a new challenge. Anneliese's mentor, Susana, is still in denial and Isabel's headmaster, Richard, has moved on. With the story alternating between the sister's plots, it is easy to read and navigate through their lives.

It truly is a sibling saga of their own accord with a mix of Downtown Abbey and Dynasty, in my opinion, hence like a soap opera :-) I guess in another term, it is a family drama. I am amazed that at volume 4, the author is still able to weave more meat into the story, going in and out with the different point of views and plots. So much has happened and yet, with more to come too!

[Crochet] Jumper for Labubu

With the recent craze of Labubu, since my daughter is also a huge fan, I have decided to crochet some wearables for the doll. I have found some YouTube videos by Pikky DIY which was resourceful and filled with many easy-to-understand patterns to crochet Labubu's clothes. I have started with this cute jumper!

I have used Bernat Satin multi-coloured worsted weight yarn that I have been keeping for ages and it turned out looking so adorable!

[Crochet] Beanies

I have been busy lately more with my crafts than my reading. I have also been joining more crafts gathering for both cross-stitching and sewing. I have received requests to teach basic crochet too. Hence, my free time is filled with endless crafting and not much time reading!

For my recent crochet class, I have been busy searching for an easy to crochet beanie for beginners. I have found such patterns by Diane Serviss of Pixiebell and made a few for the class as samples.

First one is a 30 Minute Basic Beanie:

I've used two 7-ply cotton yarns to match the bulky size with 9mm crochet hook for this pattern.

Second one is this Worsted Weight Basic Beanie:

I've used Chenille 4mm yarn with 5.5mm crochet hook for this pattern.

[MPOV] Queen of his Heart (Crown & Heart #2)

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.59/5
Publish: May 1, 2024
Author: Nikki Davenport
Genre: Romance
When dark secrets threaten the Queen he loves, betrayal is the only choice.

Why didn’t I have the good sense to walk away when I learned Khara was the Queen?

I should have said goodbye.

Stayed away.

I damn sure shouldn’t have touched her.

Now I’m in so deep I can’t imagine my world without her. Even knowing guys like me with black marks on their souls don’t get happy endings. She deserves better than the likes of me.

She’s making me yearn for things I have no right to want.

It’s a mistake to give in to the magnetic pull between us. And yet just a single taste of the sweetness that is Lytua’s Queen seals my fate.

Maybe I never had a chance.

But when dark secrets from my past threaten her life and her standing as Queen, I have to take swift action.

There’s nothing I won’t do to keep Khara safe.

So I betray the woman who’s come to mean all to me. And I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Queen of His Heart is the exciting second half of the Queen’s Desire duet. Khara and Riddick's epic love story began with Book 1 of the Crown and Heart series, International Incident.

Trigger Warning: memories of cancer and childhood trauma; profanity, graphic content; mention of SA and substance abuse; kidnapping.
Thanks to the author and LibraryThings for this copy! I hadn't realized this was book 2 but then I didn't get lost either, thankfully!

It is definitely a well written feel-good love story. From the moment Khara and Riddick met until the end, it was filled with adventure, like a roller coaster ride. It may be predictable (I had guessed the ending to be that), yet it was as emotional and full of surprise at times. I have enjoyed Khara and Riddick's journey until the end which made me felt that I've actually watched a Diva movie instead of reading it LOL! With such a lovely and warm ending to boot! If you are looking for an easy read, give this title a try but be warned that it is filled with 'lovey-dovey' stuff ya!

[MPOV] The Girl Who Dreamed: A Hong Kong Memoir of Triumph Against the Odds.

My rating: 5/5
Goodreads rating: 4.20/5
Published: October 1, 2024
Author: Sonia Leung
Genre: Memoir
At the age of 14, Sonia Leung was raped by her ping-pong coach.

She had moved from China two-and-a-half years earlier to join her family in Hong Kong, but she could not fit in. The family of six lived in a cramped subdivided hut in a Kowloon squatter village but rarely communicated with each other. The difficulties of adjusting to colonial Hong Kong heightened the tensions between her parents. Feeling trapped and unloved, Sonia was too afraid to tell anyone about the rape. She saved money by working part-time at McDonald’s and, a year later, she bought a one-way plane ticket to Taipei and ran away from home.

The Girl Who Dreamed is a memoir of her childhood in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan – and how, through work and further education, she found her way to an independent life away from the family and world from which she needed to free herself.
Thanks to the publisher, Blacksmith Books, and the author, Sonia Leung, for this ARC in return for my honest review. It truly was an eye-opening read for me and I could not fathom what this girl has gone through and endured most of her young life!
"I became non-existent to them. If I could vanish into the air, I would not feel so empty and hungry for food, attention, validation, and love."
Interestingly, the author has made many references to famous Chinese authors and poets that somehow shaped her thoughts and life. Just a mere few sentences can be enlightening, making a good impression on someone as young as the author then. TBH, I do believe that literature can make or break someone, depending on how it was understood.
"Only when I was a grown woman did I learn that the daughter's names would not enter the book of Leung's family genealogy."
Having brought up in an Asian family, I get it. I understand that Asian parenting is so different from way back then. However, I guess with what we have endured then, our perspective changed in bringing up our children hence Asian parenting has evolved, and some children are more entitled these days LOL! Anyhow this is just my opinion lah!

I have enjoyed yet agonized reading through this memoir. Definitely a harrowing experience at the start and I applaud her for being so brave to remember, write it down and published it. This is not an easy feat. Also, who would have thought that a teenager could travel alone to Taiwan without her chaperone?!!! I am amazed with her will power, her positive mind and gutsy personality! I do empathize especially when she could have been with Jeremy, have a ''HEA'' with their baby too. On the other hand, I am glad that her life turned out well and I do wish her the best in her future undertakings.

Sonia,

Thank you for sharing your story with the world.
"Writing had empowered me once. It brought on profound changes."
