A Book Affair; with Chuah Guat Eng

Last Sunday, I've participated in A Book Affair event at Desa Permai Condo with Ai Jou... with the little books we have left to sell. When Ai Jou mentioned that Chuah Guat Eng will be there, I was thrilled! Well, she is one of Malaysia's top author, not forgetting also Malaysia's first lady novelist in English!

Anyway, A Book Affair is a monthly event happening on the first Sunday at Desa Permai Condo. It's part of an initiative by 2 beautiful ladies, Vannitha and Rachel, to promote literacy among underprivileged children and to collect funding by selling preloved books.

We were all located at the community hall and since the response was lukewarm, I got to join in the chat with Chuah Guat Eng! Her topic, Creating stories for fun and self discovery, was truly enjoyable and I liked that she has pared it down for newbies like me to easily understand it.
The community hall we were in...

With Chuah Guat Eng, such a humble lady!
I bought one of her famous books, Dream Stuff, and got it autographed too!
Bought these from Book Bodega
And these from Books n Bobs
All for a good cause! FYI, the first four pics above were taken from A Book Affair.

Day out with a gooD bookish pal #atozchallenge

It was sheer coincidence when Ai Jou and I chatted via Whatsapp about going to the Art for Grabs event in The School, Jaya One. So we met up last Sunday afternoon and proceeded as planned.

First stop: Jumble Station.
As posted previously, Jumble Station is a non-profit organisation who helped Parents Without Partners in managing and getting through life as a single parent. Located at P1 floor, there is a counter for us to submit our donations and another preloved shop selling all the good condition donated stuffs in order to raise money. I was in awe with the many gems available at their books corner. Priced at RM5 each or RM8 for 2 or RM10 for 3, what a steal! We managed to get 3 books in total so mine was only RM3.30!!! Anyway, we also donated our stuffs collated from our KonMari spring-cleaning. I had a heavy bag of books and knacks... still more to come though...

Second stop: Art for Grabs event.
There were many new and preloved books stalls and handmade booths but my main target here was the KL Book Exchange booth as I had 8 books for exchange! Well, I had reserved 3 books earlier with Gladys, the owner, and then scoured the rest through the piles of books! After that, we headed for a coffee break as Ai Jou was hungry LOL!

Third stop: The Bee.
My yummy Iced Latte!
OK, I have never been here so it's my first. The place was crowded but thankfully there's a table for us. The ambiance was cosy though tight in space and noisy plus it was kinda warm. My iced latte was sugarless but I didn't sweeten it as the caffeine was bitterly tasty enough. The carrot cake was a little too sweet for my sweet tooth though LOL! Anyway, we had a great time catching up and as usual... time flies when we are enjoying ourselves. So thanks to Ai Jou for bringing me here!

Final stop: continued browsing the remaining booths.
Yes, we continued checking out the remaining booths and met Vannitha of The Revolving Library! Another great non-profit organisation raising funds to provide more literacy to under-privileged children. There were other noteworthy booths too like NotbookNotbuk with many unique handcrafted paper goods and BeGood with homemade skincare made for positivity. Honestly, I was surprised to have met some friends here though Ai Jou met more!
My final book haul! All in great condition!
I got Cornella Funke's through Jumble Station for RM3.30 only by sharing the purchase with Ai Jou! Sandra Brown's for RM1 in exchange with a book at The Revolving Library and the remaining 5 were books exchanged at KL Book Exchange. So I still have 2 more books for exchange, perhaps the next round when KLBE is in Jaya One *fingers crossed*
I'm so loving these handmade bookmarks which I got for only RM2 each!
Overall, I had a wonderful time catching up with Ai Jou. And then a great time browsing and buying/ exchanging LOL! I felt contented and happy in the end... happy sigh! Can't wait for our next date in early May!
Ai Jou, thanks for these!

Post KLBAC Book Sale

Just a recap of last Sunday's KLBAC Book Sale at Super Pharmacy Section 19 PJ. I liked the location as parking is free plus it's easy to locate the pharmacy. The only disappointment is the day/time and F&B.

Well, the day and time has impacted the crowd as it's on a Sunday from 10am to 3pm. Most church-goers and Sunday sleep-ins would skip this as the timing is off. Plus the BBW double sale was on it's last weekend at MAEPS so I assumed most readers are there to get their final loot.

Although they have spaghetti and lasagna, it's missing hot coffee!!! LOL! I would have preferred some hot coffee or tea as opposed to the regular vending machine drinks. Honestly!

I also noticed the lack of publicity hence the lacklustre response. Depending on Facebook coverage is never enough. There are many readers who are not smartphone enabled. Also the story-telling by Grandma Ean was too early so not many people then. The colouring contest was timely but the parents were mostly non-readers hence the lack of interest.
Ai Jou and I shared a table this time

My final book haul for this year which costs me RM50 only! Frugal mode on!
I got this beautiful gem from Vannitha of Itch to Switch! So loving it!
The next one is on a Saturday, 20th February 2016, same location. Not sure if I'll join in yet... still thinking about it but I do have a lot of books to be rid of... will update in due course.

The KLBAC Books Galore Sale / Swap - event update

This is the first time I've attended a KLBAC book sale / swap! First time meeting the founder, Diana, and some of the active members from KLBAC Facebook group. Also nice to catch up with Ai Jou, Naz and Vannitha! It was really a breath of fresh air meeting like-minded people!

So this is an update of last Sunday's event at Zest Cafe, hoping that you would also join us in our future events :-)

The reason Zest Cafe was chosen, aside from being in the middle of Klang Valley, for most of this group's event was the full use of the cafe, with the full cooperation from the boss himself. We actually had the whole indoor space for this event, leaving their poor customers to sit outdoor. Also, the quiet ambience suited the book discussions usually held here with the next one, about Station 11 by Emily St. John Mandel, coming on 25/10/15.
Seafood Spaghetti Aglio Olio RM19.90
I had lunch first before the event started and thankfully, it was really good. My seafood spaghetti aglio olio was fresh, tasty with big portion! My iced cafe latte was truly refreshing and caffeine smooth! The 1 thing I love, no service charge but can't escape the 6% GST though.
Iced Cafe Latte RM8.90 and my books for sale. The ones which had been reserved was not on display here.

At the end of it, I was humbled by the experience especially making more new friends. I do hope to participate more in the near future, if the time and transport allows. However, need a much better way to lug my books as it's really tiring and I couldn't bring more due to space constraint.
A special shout-out to Zarina for her handmade bags and bookmarks
I bought this lovely bookmark from her
My mini haul as I didn't want to over splurge while in the midst of KonMari de-cluttering
Many thanks to Ai Jou for fetching me and also the freebies! I truly appreciate it <3 br=""> Location: Zest Cafe, Unit 1-2, 1st Floor, The Sphere, Bangsar South
