[MPOV] Cassidy Smith, Book One: The Gray Man

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3/5
Published: September 23, 2021
Author: Paul Wilson
Genre: Paranormal, fantasy
18-year-old debutant Cassidy Smith returns from a summer party to find her home burned and her family murdered.

Fueled by a need for revenge, she journeys across a weird and haunted western landscape, all the while pursued by a powerful Magician on his own mission of revenge.

Cassidy journeys to find the being responsible for her state, the mysterious Gray Man, and avenge her stolen life. But Cassidy is a reluctantly hero. Driven by a selfish desire for blood, she is still a flawed and angry child. Her journey for revenge is also her journey to womanhood.

Will Cassidy follow her family tradition of honorable monster hunting, or will she simply evolve into a cold-blooded killer? If she manages to win through, how much of her soul will remain? What is left for a killer once the gun has cooled? What remains for a woman with no ties?
Thank you to the author, publisher and LibraryThings for the opportunity to read and be immersed in this creature killing novel! I hardly read paranormals so when I chance upon this, I gave it a try. It sure reminds me of a female Van Helsing LOL!

It's well written, filled with revenge plots yet with a soft spot at times and a likeable female protagonist. The continuous adventures, from the death of her family to when she finally found The Gray Man, were quite engaging... making sure we are kept on our toes. Definitely angst-filled especially when Alan, Cassidy's husband, died a horrible death!
We are made to help those who ask. We exist to fight evil in all it's glamour.
If you are into paranormals, then you should give this novel a try. Although this is just book one, it can be read as a standalone.

[MPOV] The Girl Who Belonged to the Sea (The Azantian Trilogy #1)

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.89/5
Published: September 28, 2021
Author: Katherine Quinn
Genre: Historical romance, fantasy, adventure
One woman chosen by the God of the Sea. A king hellbent on saving his mysterious island home. And a forbidden romance that could destroy them all.

Forced to marry the wealthy Count Casbian by her power-hungry father, Margrete turns to the gods, praying for a life free from the men who wish to rule her. Across the sea, a ruthless immortal answers…

Planning to use Margrete to reclaim a powerful relic stolen from his people, Bash, a devilishly handsome king, kidnaps Margrete on the day of her nuptials. Bringing her to his home, the mystical island of Azantian, it isn't long before a devastating secret is revealed—one that ties Margrete to the gods themselves.

Drawn to the spirited woman he's sworn to hate, Bash cannot stay away from Margrete and the passion she ignites within him. When the lines begin to blur, Margrete must make a choice between a fiery love, and saving the realm from the dangerous magic awakening inside of her soul.

The first book of this exciting fantasy trilogy is perfect for readers who love high-seas adventures, swashbuckling heroes, and forbidden, steamy romance. Fans of Danielle L. Jensen's The Bridge Kingdom, and Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses will be enthralled.
Thank you to the author, publisher and LibraryThing for giving me this opportunity to read this awesome novel!

The Girl Who Belonged to the Sea is the first of The Azantian Trilogy. It's about Margrete and Bash, from their uncanny encounter to when they fell in love, an adventure that changed their lives forever. The novel is filled with magic, Gods, hatred, deception and love... I've truly enjoyed the adventurous plots and the world building that makes it engaging! It ended as it should but with a little cliff-hanger from the little epilogue which leads to book 2... I'm sure there are more hurdles and excitement to continue Margrete and Bash's adventure.

If you like historical romance with a dash of pirates and fantasy, this is definitely up your alley.

[MPOV] Indigo

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 4.06/5
Published: 14/2/2020
Author: Paula Berinstein
Genre: Historical fiction, romance, time travel

I would like to say a huge Thank You to the author for this opportunity to mingle and enjoy Esther's time travels!
What would you do if you suddenly found yourself mistress of an 18th-century plantation?

Esther Rubens is looking forward to getting to know her new community in South Carolina and repairing her troubled marriage. But as soon as she arrives in Charleston her life begins to diverge from the idyllic picture in her mind. Her physicist husband, Melvin, is arrested for driving while black, she inherits a strange English property from a cousin she didn't know existed, and she learns that her great-grandmother Sophie, a brilliant scientist kidnapped by the Nazis, discovered the secret of time travel of all things.

Intrigued by Sophie’s cryptic journal Melvin begins to experiment with time travel, but his anger at the police makes him careless. The process backfires, killing him and throwing Esther back to 1750. Attacked by an unknown assailant the moment she arrives, she seeks protection at an indigo plantation belonging to a dashing planter with a dangerous secret, negotiating a deal that guarantees her safety. But she soon realizes she’s made a terrible mistake. What she discovers on the plantation is far more horrific than anything she could have imagined. Overwhelmed, she attempts to flee just as the planter’s mysterious, handsome brother arrives from England seeking refuge—and offering an opportunity that’s too compelling to turn down. But can he be trusted? And are the two of them strong enough to vanquish the evil that’s pervading the lowlands? Only time will tell.

The first title in the Indigo series.
At the start, Esther and Melvin seemed like any other mixed coloured couples until they migrated to the Southern region where trouble awaits them. At this point, I found the intro to be a little long as it gets a bit repetitive and I tend to skip through more.

Once the inheritance arrived, it felt like an adventure is about to begin but it was a little too fast as the whole thought process or world building from then on was not consistent. At some points, it was not as detailed and the plots were too briefed. On the other hand, it became not as realistic. I could not get into the story itself and I just couldn't imagined it. However, the gist of it was still intact and the outcome of the story was not what I thought it would be, which is good.

Esther and Jesse were just too obvious, like they immediately succumbed to Daniel's request without batting an eyelid! When Jesse knew of Esther's true identity, the story turned for the better. So much adventure from then on and no one seemed to notice this 2 were so besotted with each other! The ending was unexpected and it did had a little cliff-hanger effect since this is a series.

All in all, I was excited that this is a time travel romance as I had enjoyed The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I did placed a high expectation on it which I shouldn't have. Also with my current long drought of reading slump that didn't help as much. As Goodreads have pointed out, there are many good reviews of this novel so if you are not as nitpicky as me, go ahead and read this novel!

TBNT Book Challenge for January:
A Murder Mystery OR Combines Thrills and Romance

Book Spin Bingo:
Title starting with alphabets I OR O

My first book for the year 2022 and it turns out to be quite enthralling! It definitely meets TBNT Book Challenge of a murder mystery AND combines thrills and romance! I'm just glad that I was able to finish it as it was such a busy month! It sure felt stressful trying to finish it either so I think I'll give the challenge a miss if I'm not able to do it, not going to rush to meet it anymore.

I was transported back to the olden days of Italy when Mussolini rules the country and loyalty of the people were always tested way back then. Overall premise of the story was interesting but it was not as engaging at some point. Maybe I felt rushed to finish it but I sure was not into it somewhere in the middle. When Isabella and Roberto got together, it wasn't a surprised and the ending was what I have thought it would be.

I would think this as an entertaining read, to pass time and liked that it has an interesting look during the Mussolini regime. Though fiction, I just liked anything historical plus I liked this author's writing from her previous books. Just wished it was more engaging this time around.

A romantic quote to end this post:
"Isabella, the first time I saw you, you had a blasted chicken stuck under your arm and an ancient vecchia clinging to youfor dear life, almost toppling you over. All around there was noise and confusion and the greyness of uncertainty. Fear was stamped on everyone's face. But you, with your chicken and your old woman and your smile, were like a shaft of sunlight on that station platform.'' He let his words drift across the space that divided them. ''I loved you then, Isabella, and I love you now.''

TBNT Book Challenge 2022

Earlier this month, I have mentioned that I will slow down on my reading in order to allow a more relaxing year with more time for other hobbies such as to craft, garden or even colour.

In view of this, I have lowered my Goodreads reading challenge from 36 books last year (to which I didn't complete) to 13 books for this year. Why 13? Well, this is to accommodate TBNT Book Challenge which has13 challenges. Aside from this, I am also going for Litsy's Book Spin Bingo which can be used concurrently with TBNT Book Challenge so no extra pressure here. I've thought of joining again some KLBAC book discussions but that will probably be after Chinese New Year. There are quite a few based on various genres so depending on my schedule, if it's too tight then I'll forgo it.

Anyway, I'm sharing TBNT Book Challenge here, in case any of you readers are interested to participate.
Wish me luck!!!

[MPOV] A Gift from Bob (Bob the Cat #3) by James Bowen

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.22/5
Published: 1/1/2014
Author: James Bowen
Genre: Memoir

December's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A book that has been adapted for the screen OR a screenplay / theatrical play

I've had this book in my TBR pile like for aeons so I'm glad to finally reading it! Unfortunately, Bob has also recently passed away so it is only apt that I read it now.
Street Cat Bob and James, stars of bestselling A Street Cat Named Bob and The World According to Bob that touched millions around the world, spend a cold and challenging December on the streets together in a new adventure. From the day James rescued a street cat abandoned in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, they began a friendship which has transformed both their lives and, through the bestselling books A STREET CAT NAMED BOB and THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BOB, touched millions around the world. In this new story of their journey together, James looks back at the last Christmas they spent scraping a living on the streets and how Bob helped him through one of his toughest times - providing strength, friendship and inspiration but also teaching him important lessons about the true meaning of Christmas along the way.
I’ve enjoyed James journey with Bob in this lovely memoir. It’s sincere and truthful, capturing the essence of their friendship wholeheartedly! Now I did wished I have read it earlier but then everything happens for a reason, right?!

Anyway, this book is so endearingly honest and an easy read to boot. Aside from Bob, James has also shared his gratitude to his customers and friends who have supported him through it all from the moment he was clean, no judgement, just caring people. It is so nice to know that there are still so many nice people on Earth! This has definitely been an eye-opening read for me especially from the point of view of someone who was homeless before.

Thank you, Bob, for saving James.
Thank you, James, for this lovely memoir.
Now to look for the rest of the books!

[MPOV] Auntie Lee's Deadly Specials (Singaporean Mystery #2) by Ovidia Yu

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.71/5
Published: 30/9/2014
Author: Ovidia Yu
Genre: Mystery fiction, cozy mystery

This is my pick for November's Book Challenge:
TBNT Book Challenge: A book with a picture of food on the cover OR food in the title
Rosie “Aunty” Lee, the feisty widow, amateur sleuth, and proprietor of Singapore’s best-loved home cooking restaurant, is back in another delectable, witty mystery involving scandal and murder among the city’s elite.

Few know more about what goes on in Singapore than Aunty Lee. When a scandal over illegal organ donation involving prominent citizens makes news, she already has a list of suspects. There’s no time to snoop, though—Aunty Lee’s Delights is catering a brunch for local socialites Henry and Mabel Sung at their opulent house.

Rumor has it that the Sung’s fortune is in trouble, and Aunty Lee wonders if the gossip is true. But soon after arriving at the Sung’s house, her curiosity turns to suspicion. Why is a storage house she discovers locked? What is the couple arguing about behind closed doors? Where is the guest of honor who never showed up?
Note: I am way behind my review postings so do anticipate a few bursts this week while I'm catching up.

I have enjoyed the first book, Auntie Lee's Delights (you can read my review here) so when this book challenge came up, I immediately thought of this book which was gifted by Ai Jou! Thankfully as I do not have another book to match that challenge, unless it's a cookbook LOL!!!

Book 2 seemed a little off, kinda long winded and wasn't as engaging for me. I'm not sure if it's due to my reading slump then whilst forcing myself to finish the challenge or I honestly find it quite repetitive for the first half of the book! Referencing back to the first book is fine but repeatedly or harping on the same points again and again was quite off-putting for me.

As the story progresses to the actual plots, then only I started to enjoy it somewhat. As usual, it reminded me of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple but in an Asian context LOL! The plots were more entertaining than the first book though which is a plus here. If you are looking for an Asian detective story, you can give Ovidia Yu's Singaporean Mystery series a try.

[MPOV] The Finest Lies

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.48/5
Published: October 14th, 2021
Author: David J. Naiman
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction
High schooler Nicole Hallett has just about had it with her brother Jay, so when a mysterious man appears with an offer to replace him with a better one, she doesn’t hesitate. Nicole has always been impulsive, but this time, she finds herself in predicament far worse than anything she’s experienced. Just like that, an average snow day—usually filled with hot cocoa and snowball fights—is commandeered by the stranger, who forces the siblings into a dangerous game.

Confronted by past reflections, tested by present complications, and threatened by future possibilities, Nicole has until the end of the day to disentangle the riddle of her life.

This suspenseful, yet winsome novel by award-winning author David J. Naiman explores the power of family and forgiveness. But take heed. The truth can cut like shards of glass, especially for those who’d rather avoid it. Sometimes, only the finest lies will do.
I have received this e-ARC from the author in return for my honest review. I had bouts of bad reading slumps due to the previous lockdown and I've tried switching to other genres but it didn't work. My Kobo had also turned on me and suddenly died!!! When I finally got it up and running, I realized all my existing e-books were gone! So I had to hunt and redownload it all again! Gosh so much drama lah! Anyway, finally I was able to finish reading this e-ARC and a thousand apologies to the author for the much delayed review.

The story delved into the most common sibling rivalry's question... ''would you trade your sibling for a better one?'' It's mostly on the sister's point of view. I liked the many moments of eye-opening experiences of the said sister, awareness on the treatment given to the sibling or close friends. With all this, she has finally seen what she has become to and was given the chance to repent. The ending may be the expected one but it is the journey that brings the story up. The author has put in quite an effort to create this unusual set-up yet engaging story.

This is a Young Adult novel with a strong message about family, especially sibling rivalry and shallow minds. It truly is a refreshing read for me with the way the story span and I loved a good ending. All in all, it was an entertaining read for me.
Here's an excerpt from the novel, you can check it out...

[MPOV] Pets in Space 6: A Science Fiction Romance Anthology: Behr's Rebel (Marastin Dow Book 2) by S.E. Smith

My rating: 4/5 based on first story, Behr's Rebel (Marastin Dow Book 2) by S.E. Smith
Goodreads rating: 4.86/5
Published: October 5th, 2021
Edited by Carol Van Natta
Genre: Science Fiction, Romance, Short Stories

October's Book Challenge:
TBNT Book Challenge: An alternative timelines read OR written by a public figure

This anthology came just in time for this month's book challenge, an alternative timelines read. However, it arrived a little late hence I didn't have time to finish reading it. I've only managed to finish the first story to post this review. Thank you to the publisher for this e-ARC in return for my honest review and I will definitely finished reading it to provide a full review later on.

The main reason why I accepted this anthology is because of their charitable nature. 10% of the preorders and the first month's sales will be donated to Hero Dogs, a charity org that provides trained service dogs to disabled veterans and first-responders in the USA. Pets in Space 6 is written by pet lovers for pet lovers in general. I am so humbled to be a part of this good cause.

There are 11 short stories in this anthology, aside from the first one I've read by S.E. Smith, the remaining are:
1. Star Cruise: Time Loop (A Sectors Romance) by Veronica Scott
Eyn, a three-eyed lizard, has a multi-layered shell, but likes to spend time with his owner, Raelyn. Good thing, too, since she’s reliving the same terrible day. If she can’t get out of the time loop, everyone on the interstellar cruise ship she’s on will die, including the man she’s falling in love with.

2. The Cyborg with No Name (Cyborgs on Mars Series) by Honey Philips
A robot dog is Rose’s only companion in the Martian outback. He’s a quirky collection of mismatched parts, but he’s hers. Despite what her former employer thinks, the outcast scientist knows the robots she developed to help with the terraforming process are more than machines. Especially when a robot horse she created shows up at her doorstep and leads her to an injured cyborg ranger.

3. Escape from Nova Nine (A Central Galactic Concordance Novella) by Carol Van Natta
Griffins in space… They’re small, birdlike creatures that were genetically engineered to look like miniature griffins from mythology. Against all odds, they’re thriving in the harsh environment of a rogue asteroid mine. They could be the key to survival and escape for prisoners Julke and Zade.

4. Trade Secrets (The Department of Homeworld Security) by Cassandra Chandler
When is a cat more than a cat? When he’s a space kitten, of course. The kitten has already adopted alien Xan, who’s only trying to keep his friends out of trouble. Earth at large isn’t ready to learn that aliens exist. Then the kitten decides that human Gwen, who’s stumbled across their secrets, would be the perfect pet…, er, mate for Xan.

5. See How They Run (TriSystems: Smugglers Series) by JC Hay
Positive, Negative, and Monocle are three ordinary-looking lab mice who are inexplicably accustomed to low-gravity. When engineer Baker steals them, she discovers they’re more than they seem. She hopes so, because it could save the life of her coworker, who means so much more to Baker than she’s willing to admit.

6. Suri's Sure Thing (Kimura Sisters Series) by S.J. Pajonas
Finn is a gorgeous, goofy golden retriever with a heart the size of the galaxy. He is pair-bonded with workaholic Suri, who would rather be in space than deal with her complicated family life. Finn knows Suri would be happier if she’d only notice her best friend Eric, so they could stay together. Maybe a trip to space would help her see the light…

7. The Thunder Egg (Dryden Universe Novella) by Greta van der Rol
Neyru is a… well, no one really knows. She looks sort of like a tiny winged dinosaur, and she might be psychic. All vacationing professor Drew knows is she’s beautiful and clever, and growing fast. If only he can convince sexy freighter captain Afra to help him get the little alien foundling back where she belongs.

8. Worlds of Fire: Metamorphosis (Worlds of Fire Series) by Deborah A. Bailey
In the Worlds of Fire, people with magical abilities sometimes have familiars, animal companions they can talk to. Gargoyle shifter Jaydon has a gold-bodied, black-winged bird named Delphy. Student Asira has never met a familiar, and isn’t sure what to think when Jaydon says the only reason he agreed to teach her is because Delphy recommended her.

9. Stranded on Grzbt (Far Star Series) by Melisse Aires
Mimi and her companions are stuck in an alien spaceport, trying to find their way back home to Earth. Mimi befriends and feeds a tiny alien creature the size of a mouse, with three eyes, six paws, and a trunk. Her new pet returns the favor by helping her meet handsome alien Kyre, who might be their best chance for survival.

10. Escaping Korth (Before the Fall Series) by Kyndra Hatch
Agronomist Liana Walker is a casualty of the Human-Korth war. Held captive and interrogated as an enemy combatant, her only friend is Rainbow, an eight-legged spider-like creature with a crab-like shell and large, soft antennae. Plus twelve eyes that allow Rainbow to see the truth when Liana can’t. Such as, her interrogator is the same Korth male she grew up with, before the war separated them.
Behr's Rebel (Marastin Dow Book 2) by S.E. Smith
Chummy and Pi are cute and fluffy alien pets. They’re pretty sure they rescued Raia, the human woman they travel with, not the other way around. In any case, it’s going to take all three of them to rescue a Marastin Dow General who is slated for execution.
This short story consisted of 16 chapters on how a human was appointed by a few Marastin Dow rebels to save their general who will be executed in the next 3 days. After the rescue, they were to meet at a rendezvous point to handover the general. Sparks ignited between the human and the general slowly but surely with the human's pets intervention.
With the help of her two innovative pets, a human woman rescues an alien General and becomes part of the revolution he is leading.
I am surprised with the natural flow of the story even though it is sci-fi with many new terms and characters. Also this is book 2 of Marastin Dow but it can be read as a standalone and I am surprised I was not lost in space! I have always avoided reading sci-fi as I'm always confused in the end. However, this is well written with a difference. I have thoroughly enjoyed this first piece and definitely looking forward to the remaining stories with high anticipation.

The award-winning anthology Pets in Space 6 featuring 11 of today’s bestselling SFR authors is back for a limited time! Grab your copy today and support Hero-Dogs.org!

[MPOV] Nothing Bad Ever Happens in Tiffany's

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.48/5
Published: May 6th, 2005
Author: Marian Keyes
Genre: short stories
Marian Keyes spearheaded a new wave of contemporary women's fiction providing wickedly funny tales of twenty- and thirty-somethings living and loving on the edge. No stranger to the roadless commonly travelled herself, Marian has also written two collections of tales and observations from her own life. Nothing Bad Ever Happens in Tiffany's is a small but perfectly formed selection of these.
This is a compilation of short stories by Marian Keyes, in a way of ranting her actual misfortune or misadventure. Initially, I did find it relevant and humorous but eventually it became some sort of a bore and I've lost interest. She writes pretty well, that's a given, so I could actually finished reading it. Yes, I did persevered until the end just to complete it! However, too much rants in one book got on my nerves I guess. Hence the reason why I took a long time to finish this 56 pager 8 chapters book!

[MPOV] If Malaysia was Anime: Covidball Z #1, 2 & 3

My overall rating: 3/5
#1 Goodreads rating: 4.63
#2 Goodreads rating: 4.38
#3 Goodreads rating: 3.73
Published: year 2020
Author: Ernest Ng
Genre: comic, fiction, satirical

Thanks to Ai Jou for this wonderful birthday gift and I am able to read it for this month's challenge!
September's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A locally published kids' book OR a humorous read
The year is 2020 and we are under attack from the Covid Forces! It is time for us to fight back!

This comic book is a work of parody and satire. It tells the story of how we reacted during the 2020 pandemic and also some funny Malaysian incidents. Storytelling has been enhanced to be as ridiculous and as anime as possible.

We know it's a manga but the word anime sounds better.

Fully coloured!
High quality print!
Durable paper material!
Kick ass content!

Contains several chapters that was never uploaded online because the author thought it was too stupid to post up.
Firstly, I was taken by the well printed comic, good quality finished and strong colours that blew my mind! I have always seen the thin ones from the likes of Marvel or DC Comics which I wasn't keen on as it is easily torn. This one is way better and definitely a keeper!

When I've picked this for this month's book challenge, I intended to read only the first book as I thought it would be thought provoking deep. It turns out it was a breeze reading it all! Yes, I've finished it all within a week!

It was entertaining, comedic and satirical at it's best! I can definitely relate to it and understood the jokes behind it. This author is way creative! It honestly turns out to be a good comic and I'm proud that it is Malaysian made.

If you are looking for something to perk you up from your reading slump or looking for something funny, you should give this comic a try.

[MPOV] The Far Side of the Sun

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.69/5
Published: December 5th, 2013
Author: Kate Furnivall
Genre: historical fiction, mystery, romance, crime

My pick for August's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A book about climate change OR set in a tropical climate
2. Book Spin / Book Spin Bingo: letters K or B (Kate Furnivall)

Dodie is a waitress trying to make ends meet in Bahamas. This novel follows the turmoil Dodie encountered after trying to save a stabbed man by the roadside who eventually died at her house. From meeting and falling in love with Flynn to investigating the truth behind the dead man, it all broils down to the rich in Bahamas with the likes of a Duke, a Sir and a few others with many more deaths to come.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author has written this novel. Very easy to understand, even with the many point of views, it was short and sweet as it's labelled at each chapter accordingly. Yet, it was intriguing and had me vested in the story. It was rightly paced which slowly build up the momentum and I just can't wait to finish it!

Though it may seemed odd the way it started with Dodie finding and helping an injured unknown man, this is set in the 40's on a small island hence the appropriateness may differ to a town or city. As such, with a little romance and crime do set the story nicely with a few other distinguished cohorts and the high societies then. The premise itself made it easily relatable overall and the ending was unexpected for me.

I have only read one other book by Kate Furnivall, The Russian Concubine, but I do find this one much more enjoyable and I could easily immersed myself into the story. It maybe a little predictable at some point, yet it was engaging with well written prose. I honestly do missed the beach, especially in a lockdown now due to Covid-19! I just can't wait to bring out my beach bag and board a plane to Bali!
My love, this is a new beginning. Us together. Forget the rest. This is you and me.

[MPOV] Dracula from the story by Bram Stoker

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.06/5
Published: March 1st, 1996
Retold by Mike Stocks
Genre: horror, vampire, literature, classic

I've picked another quick read for July's Book Challenge:
A speculative novella OR a read with magical elements

I have watched numerous Dracula's and Van Helsing's movies, though it may be gory and scary at times, I have never expected reading a Usborne Classics Retold version would be a frightening experience. I kept getting chills and goosebumps, half expecting something to jump out of nowhere! Imagine that, it is just a novella for young readers!
Truthful retellings of classic stories, clearly written in a modern, approachable style for young readers. Include informative notes on the authors and original texts.
It is well retold in a informative and easy to understand manner about a lawyer's encounter of a vampire in Transylvania which led to him to be gravely ill and lost contact with his fiancee in London. Mina, his fiancee, finally received a letter from a hospital in Budapest informing her of Jonathan's ill health to which she quickly travelled to looking for him. She was shocked to see his poor condition and slowly nurse him to good health. He has given his journal of his encounter for Mina to read and understand what has happened to him but she has kept it instead. They got married and returned to London. One day while on a stroll, Jonathan was shocked to see the vampire prying on a innocent girl. Upon learning this, Mina decided to read Jonathan's journal and together they embarked on a journey to seek and destroy the vampire.

I'm glad to have finally read this, although short, it isn't a sweet one LOL! It did give me scary goosebumps especially towards the end and I liked that ending. At least it has a ''happy ever after'' one :-) The overall story was mildly retold yet with chilly effects. It slightly deviates from the movie versions I've watched and I'm unsure of the true, original one from Bram Stoker. I've never read it which I think I never will in the future too, my fragile heart can't take it LOL!!! Anyway, this retold was well written and definitely suitable for the young readers.

Another pick for July's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A speculative novella OR a read with magical elements
2. Book Spin / Book Spin Bingo: letters T or A (Anna Tan)

This is a reread for me, you can read my initial review here:

The experience reading it a second time is different as, initially, I've read it over a span of a few years due to it's various release dates from the e-ARC I've received. Now reading it at one go from a book definitely had a much pleasant reading journey compared to earlier.

This is a unique novel where the story is broken down by it's various phase of life. First one, When Wind Blows Cold, is based on Danis finding Hana. Next, The Flame of The North and Beneath The Rumbling Earth are based on both Mica and Hono, Danis and Hana's children. Last but not least, The Still, Small Voice is based on Hono.

Overall, it was truly an exciting journey for a simple kinda folklore with some magical elements. It is fast paced and straightforward which can be finished in 2 seating max but I did take a longer time to complete due to working from home. After finishing work, there are lots of home chores to complete too! Anyway, it has only 93 pages so you get the drift :-)

The remaining 27 pages is based on a trilogy the author is working on. Shattered Memories is part of this trilogy namely Absolution so you can get a taste of what to expect from it. Amok is the first release from the Absolution trilogy and I have read the e-ARC. You can check out my review here:

All in all, Anna Tan's novels are suitable for all walks of life including young readers too. With it's easy to understand prose and attractive magical realism, I'm sure it will keep them, and even us, entertained until the end :-)

For more deets, you can check out her website:

Thank you again, Anna, for the opportunity to read and review your novels. I truly can't wait for the next Absolution novel!

[MPOV] Sewing Face Masks, Scrub Caps, Arm Slings, and More

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 4.38/5
Published: April 1st, 2021
Author: Angie Herbertson
Genre: non-fiction, crafts, sewing

I've gotten this e-ARC from Netgalley as I was interested in sewing more other types of face masks.

This is my pick for July's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A speculative novella OR a read with magical elements
2. Book Spin / Book Spin Bingo: letters T or A (Angie Herbertson)

Interestingly, very straightforward with many templates and it's easy to pick up sewing even for a newbie. It is very thorough with proper instructions and pics that you won't get lost. Very easy to understand which is a plus as like many sewists, I may not know most sewing jargons.

There are a total of 14 patterns to choose from, all practical projects. It does piqued my interests on the other projects which I have to find time and material to do it LOL! Perhaps later when I am not bogged down by work and life :-)

[MPOV] The Vagina Monologues

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.87/5
Published: January 1st, 1996
Author: Eve Ensler
Genre: non-fiction, feminism, plays

Synopsis from Goodreads:
I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues...At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them. Women secretly love to talk about their vaginas. They get very excited, mainly because no one's ever asked them before.

Another pick for June's #bookspin #bookspinbingo with letter E or F (Eve Ensler)

I have always been curious about this book, mainly due to it's outrageous title, The Vagina Monologues, as though vagina could talk LOL! Anyway, the Asian upbringing in me was taken back a little whilst reading it, a bit of a culture shock kinda way, but after a while I get used to it.

This book is based on real women's stories, their experiences and their monologues compiled by the author. The sharing of their discovery of their vagina, be it sexual or intimate, was quite profound and I am surprised that there are such support groups for this! Of course, only in the USA and not in Malaysia lah! Their stories were quite frank and straightforward that I could feel their anxiety or sadness or pain.
I finally know the difference between pleasing and loving, obeying and respecting...
Aside from the vagina monologues, it's also about Female Empowerment or Girl Power. This is where violence against women came into view with the V-Day Movement. There are some sharing of such related stories too.
Eve Ensler, also known mononymously as V, is an American playwright, performer, feminist and activist. She is on a mission among so many other great and powerful women to help women accept their bodies.
The author credits her past marriage, rehab and therapy with helping her work through issues. A woman in progress, she pointedly never uses the word ''overcome''.
When you rape, beat, maim, mutilate, burn, bury and terrorise women, you destroy the essential life energy in the planet.

If you like reading on feminism or the likes then this would be up your alley. If you are curious like me, you must read with an open mind and not closed up rigid. Overall, this is an eye-opening read for me which made me love myself more.

[MPOV] My Brilliant Friend (Book 1 of the Neapolitan Novels)

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.97/5
Published: September 25th, 2012
Author: Elena Ferrante
Translator: Ann Goldstein
Genre: women's fiction, Italian literature

My Brilliant Friend is the first book in Italian writer Elena Ferrante’s world-acclaimed quartet of Neapolitan novels, which documents the friendship between Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo. It was originally published in 2011.

A modern masterpiece from one of Italy's most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense and generous hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante's inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighbourhood, a city and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her two protagonists.

This is my pick for June's Book Challenge:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A translated book OR written by a non native-English speaker
2. Book Spin / Book Spin Bingo: letters E and F (Elena Ferrante)

This is book one of the Neapolitan Novels quartet by Elena Ferrante. The story revolves around Lena and her neighbourhood, especially on her love and hate friendship with Lila. This book is about her childhood and adolescence, narrated in her point of view where she has typed it down into her computer. Here she shares her story from the day she met Lila, how their friendship progressed and eventually blossomed into the best buds they are today.

This is not the first and I guess it will not be the last where a translated book got me nowhere. I'm not sure if it is due to the translation or what nots but I just couldn't get into the story, just couldn't grasp it nor resonate with it. It was hard for me to wear Lena's shoes and view it all through her eyes. I could imagined her speaking though with her slang.

In the chapter of their childhood, there is quite a few reference of husband beating wife and children, brothers beating sisters, arguments between neighbours and drunken men fighting in this poor neighbourhood. It is similar to some of the TV series or movies I have watched hence I was able to relate here. Btw, this has been made into a TV series which I have yet to catch.

Lena does has a competitive streak which elevates her jealousy towards Lila and always wanting to be a step better though feeling inferior always. Both are relatively good in their studies but Lila had to stop schooling and started working for her family. However, she still goes to the library to read more. Lena does missed their friendship when Lila slowly distanced away from her then, leaving Lena to move on without her.

During their adolescence, Lila has blossomed into a beautiful young lady and all the legit bachelors came knocking on her door. Lena, however, became plumpier and not as pretty as Lila in her own view, which led to her being more inferior and lack of confidence, hiding like a shadow behind Lila but she still strives to be good in her studies. When Lila continues to befriend her again, Lena was happy to have her best friend back though with a kind of resentment at times or envy in another!

It is a complicated kind of friendship with many characters and subplots that were thrown in to make this poor neighbourhood dramatically alive. Through it all, I got confused, passionless, at times interested and a little intrigued. I do want to enjoy this acclaimed novel by Elena Ferrante but it is somehow not my cup of tea though I have persevered to finish it. It did reminds me of J.K Rowling's Casual Vacancy with a similar kind of scenario but of a different pace that I have DNF it.

The author chose to write it like a screenplay, a memory play to be precise, with Lena reminiscing of her past with Lila and typing it into the computer. It did feels like a drama on TV but with the main character narrating the whole drama from her point of view only and the remaining characters are there to supply the drama with more chaos and friction, just like an actual TV drama. I guess I'm not in favour of such prose as such I got lost in translation, so to speak. I've speed read through just so I could finished and know how it ends instead of DNF it.

As this is book 1, the ending has a slight cliffhanger so you would need to have book 2 ready so as not to stop suddenly, like me now LOL! If you like melodramatic kinda novel like a telenovela then this quartet should be up your alley. Lena is like many of us, booknerds or not, who are insecure of ourselves, lack of confidence with the inferiority complex hence it is easily relatable on this point.
''They won't touch me, because I'm ugly and I don't have my period,'' she said, ''but with you they might. If anything happens, tell me.''

I looked at her in confusion. We were almost thirteen, we knew nothing about institutions, laws, justice. I went home. I realized that with those last words she had admitted that I was important to her, and I was happy.

Whereas Lila, starting in March, at sixteen, would have a husband and within a year, at seventeen, a child, and then another, and another, and another. I felt I was a shadow, I wept in despair.

"Not for you: you're my brilliant friend, you have to be the best of all, boys and girls." - Raffaella Cerullo

[MPOV] Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

My rating: 4/5
Goodreads rating: 3.83/5
Published: December 7th, 2004
Author: Rebecca Wells
Genre: Women's fiction, contemporary, Southern

When Siddalee Walker, oldest daughter of Vivi Abbott Walker, Ya-Ya extraordinaire, is interviewed in the New York Times about a hit play she's directed, her mother gets described as a "tap-dancing child abuser." Enraged, Vivi disowns Sidda. Devastated, Sidda begs forgiveness, and postpones her upcoming wedding. All looks bleak until the Ya-Yas step in and convince Vivi to send Sidda a scrapbook of their girlhood mementos, called "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." As Sidda struggles to analyze her mother, she comes face to face with the tangled beauty of imperfect love, and the fact that forgiveness, more than understanding, is often what the heart longs for.

I'm reading this for May's book challenges below:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A Bildungsroman (coming of age story) OR exploring relationships & family issues
2. Book Spin / Book Spin Bingo: letters B and R (Rebecca Wells)
My mother is not the Holy Lady, she thought. My mother's love is not perfect. My mother's love is good enough. My lover's love is good enough. Maybe I am good enough.
All the while reading this book, I somehow envisioned Jessica Lange as Vivi. I recently got to know there was a movie based on this book but the actress acted as Vivi was a different one. Am not sure if I will watch it yet. Anyway, back to this awesome book. This is one book which I would loved to be in! The story, the writing, the pact, the everything are so deep yet with so much feels!

The past: Vivi grew up seeking her mother's love and father's approval but her mother, Buggy, was a devout Christian who couldn't tolerate Vivi's wild behavior. Her parents were always arguing due to their different faith and believe. Vivi was also beaten by her own father. Hence after she got married, her husband was rarely home to help her raising their 4 children, she vent her anger on the children with Sidda getting the brunt of it. Vivi finally succumbed to depression and had a huge mental breakdown.

The future: Sidda is having a nervous breakdown and wanted to delay her marriage. Her reason was purely due to her relationship with her family. She idolized her mother, Vivi, and her best friends. As their past is a blur to her, she hopes to find out their secrets and resolved her insecurities once and for all so that she could move on with her life.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood is a story of awakening, family and friends... the relationship of 3 generations of women... the ups, the meltdowns all correlated to one another. From Buggy to Vivi, from Vivi to Sidda, it truly is a cycle from one woman's experience to another. The journey one experienced, so eventful and adventurous, I am envious of it all! On the other hand, it sure proves as relevant even now as most of the time we rarely discussed our feelings, our state of mind to each other or anyone. Mental health is real!

I won't divulge much but I can't help getting over those emotional chaos after reading this book! Definitely having a book hangover now LOL! I do find it is well written, easily absorbed and the way Rebecca Well plots the story is up my alley. If you are looking for a family oriented read with lots to think about, you should give this book a try.
Them that know don't tell; and them that tell don't know. For Siddalee Walker, the need to understand had passed, at least for the moment. All that was left was love and wonder.
Some new words for me:
Equipoise - balance of forces or interests

Vetiver - a fragrant extract or essential oil obtained from the root of an Indian grass, used in perfumery and aromatherapy

Genuflect - lower one's body briefly by bending one knee to the ground, typically in worship or as a sign of respect

Pissoir - a public urinal

Whippoorwill - a North and Central American nightjar with a distinctive call

Emphysema - a lung disease which results in shortness of breath due to over-swelling of the alveoli

[MPOV] What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures

My rating: 3/5
Goodreads rating: 3.85/5
Published: October 20th, 2009
Author: Malcolm Gladwell
Genre: non-fiction, psychology, sociology, social science, economics

What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century?

In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period.

Here you'll find the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling creations of pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and why it was that employers in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

I have picked this book based on April challenges for the below:
1. TBNT Book Challenge: A book with an animal on the cover
2. Bookspin / Bookspin Bingo: letters G and M (Malcolm Gladwell)

To be honest, I've come across many rave reviews of this author. Hence my expectation is definitely high for this book. I do agree, it was well written with a straightforward prose, definitely getting the message over with lots of details and examples. The author definitely did his homework thoroughly which is why he could explain it quite accurately. However the habitual paraphrasing the story with elaborated examples is a little over daunting for me which in turn kinda bored me a little especially when it isn't my cup of tea. I guess reading it as a short story on a weekly basis differed to reading it in a book where all the short stories are. His style of writing is very prominent as such.

Anyway, there are a few which I've enjoyed, in fact eye opening for me like:
  1. True Colors
  2. John Rock's Error
  3. What the Dog Saw
  4. The Picture Problem
  5. Something Borrowed
  6. Late Bloomers
  7. Dangerous Minds
  8. Troublemakers
These stories resonate with me and I could relate to it or have interest in it. The others were more business like with more conundrums that is more for the serious minded LOL! Anyway, if you like varieties then this book is definitely for you. It is actually a great mind boggling filled with facts kinda read!

Here are some interesting facts, there were more but I've reduced it to this 4:
There are five known fundamental tastes in the human palate:
Salty, sweet sour butter and umami

When a woman is on the Pill, however, no egg is released, because the Pill suppresses ovulation. The fluxes of estrogen and progestin that cause the lining of the uterus to grow are dramatically reduced, because the Pill slows down the ovaries.

The problem of interval tumors explains why the overwhelming majority of breast-cancer experts insist that women in the critical 50 - 69 age group get regular mammograms.

Choking is about thinking too much. Panic is about thinking too little.
